Confessions of a Dietitian |
“I wish I was smart enough to think of something that dumb” is what an elderly lady at a senior housing facility once said to me. She said this as she watched me place a thermometer into a milk carton during an audit I was conducting, ensuring it was being held at a safe temperature. I had to marvel at the comment for a moment, realizing that in many ways we have made life too complicated. While some of life’s new complexities are important from a safety standpoint, comments like these still force me to look at life from a different perspective. I ask myself how I can simplify things to get more enjoyment out of life. One thing I have found with regard to eating is that the simpler the better. I don’t mean that you should sacrifice flavor and enjoyment, but rather take advantage of the abundant food supply we have in this country – stretch your taste buds and experience the true flavor of foods as they were meant to be experienced.

March Is National Nutrition Month®! |
|
March is a great time to take a closer look at your eating habits and decide if it’s time for a change. Answer these questions to see how you rate:
- Do you feel good about most of your food choices?
Do you stop eating when you are full (do you know when you are full?)?
Are you eating 5 to 9 servings of fruits & vegetables each day?
Are you satisfied that your weight is healthy for you?
Do you view fast foods as an occasional treat (2 or less times per week)?
Do you exercise for 30 minutes 3 or more times per week?
Do you eat meals regularly throughout the day and avoid skipping meals?
If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, you might want to consider making some adjustments to your eating style. It’s the sum of our ‘routine’ behaviors over time that seem to catch up with us in the way of health problems. And remember that we are always here to help if you decide you need a comprehensive nutrition evaluation. |

Q: If a food is labeled “organic” does that mean all of the ingredients are organic?
A: There are many terms used to describe and market organic food products. Some of these terms can be misleading so it’s important to understand what you are buying.
- “100% Organic” means 100% of the ingredients are organic
- “Organic” means 95-99% of the ingredients are organic
- “Made with organic ingredients” means 74-94% of the ingredients are organic
