Confessions of a Dietitian

The New Year is filled with resolutions – promises we make to ourselves that we will make healthy life changes.  We often expect perfection from ourselves, which often leads to disappointment.

As a new dietitian, I soon realized that perfection does not apply to eating.  I recall one instance early in my career where I recommended a very restrictive diet to a patient.  The response from the patient’s physician was, “What’s left, sawdust?”  Though the patient’s complex medical condition warranted the restrictions, they weren’t realistic.

I will never forget that.  It still serves as a reminder to me that life is not perfect.

Creating the “perfect” meal plan might seem reasonable on the surface, but the truth is that we all want the flexibility to choose what we eat.  Despite our imperfections, we have a lot of power in our hands to make good choices.  Though we might not be successful at this EVERY day, we can be successful over the course of our lifetime.  As a nutrition therapist, my job is to tailor nutritional recommendations specifically to your life.  Everyone is faced with a different set of circumstances and the same eating style just doesn’t work for everyone.  Make the decision to succeed today!

Nutritious New Year’s Resolutions

What’s your New Year’s Resolution?  To lose weight?  To exercise more?   To eat healthy?   While these are all great goals, have you asked yourself how you plan to get there?

What’s your have a plan?  Take a moment to really think about it and answer these questions:

  • What steps are you going to take to reach your goal?
  • What day(s) of the week are you going to enlist your new behavior?
  • If needed, do you have the new equipment or tools to carry out your plan?
  • Who are you going to call or seek out for help when you feel like giving up?
  • What resources do you have to go to when you have questions?
  • How are you going to reward yourself when you reach your goal?

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Put your goals & strategies on paper – and consider signing a contract with yourself if you think it will help you take it more seriously.
  • Make a list of reasons why you want to make the change.  You will find this list to be of value as you continue to work toward your goals.  There may be a time when you need to be reminded why it was so important to you in the first place.  Put this list in a convenient place where you can see it.
  • Ask friends or family to support you in your endeavor.
  • Don’t use food as a reward for achieving goals – consider non-food items such as new gym clothes or membership, an mp3 player, or a new piece of kitchen equipment.

Meals That Matter

It’s easy to find yourself preparing the same meals over and over again.  Why?  The reason is simple.  You can prepare it quickly, easily and your family likes it.  To ease into change slowly, try altering one menu item at a time.  If your family is used to having peas with meatloaf, try switching to lima beans.  You’ll have more variety without much effort.  Here are some ideas for your next meal:

Baked Garlic Chicken
coat chicken with minced garlic and olive oil, then sauté or bake

Angel Hair Pasta
choose whole wheat pasta and coat lightly with basil, olive oil and parsley; add grape tomatoes for extra color and flavor

Steamed Asparagus

Cinnamon Applesauce
try Mott’s brand natural applesauce and add a sprinkle of cinnamon
